    Professor Park Jung-won is a leading Korean specialist in hepatocellular carcinoma with over 30 years of experience. He is the Director of the Liver and Liver Cancer Center and the Integrated Cancer Care Center at Myongji Hospital. He led Korea’s first HCC guidelines in 2003. He has also overseen their updates for about 20 years. His team validated proton beam radiotherapy for liver cancer, as published in the Journal of Hepatology. He has authored more than 200 SCI-indexed papers. He also helped lead global trials, including the 2025 CheckMate 9DW study, which showed improved outcomes with nivolumab plus ipilimumab for unresectable HCC.

Qualifications

Professor Park Jung-won is one of Korea’s leading liver cancer specialists and a nationally recognized authority in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). With more than 30 years of experience in liver disease, he specializes in the diagnosis and medical treatment of liver cancer, liver cirrhosis, hepatitis, and other chronic liver diseases. He currently serves as Director of the Liver & Liver Cancer Center and Director of the Integrated Cancer Care Center at Myongji Hospital.

Professor Park has played a major role in shaping liver cancer treatment standards in South Korea. In 2003, he led the development of Korea’s first multidisciplinary clinical practice guidelines for hepatocellular carcinoma and continued to lead their revisions for approximately 20 years. His research also demonstrated the effectiveness and safety of proton beam radiotherapy for liver cancer, with the results published in the Journal of Hepatology. He has led and participated in numerous international clinical trials of new treatments for liver cancer and has published more than 200 SCI-indexed papers on liver cancer, hepatitis B, cirrhosis, and related liver diseases. In 2025, he also reported results from the multinational Phase III CheckMate 9DW trial showing improved outcomes with nivolumab plus ipilimumab for unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma.
