Le Dr Verges est diplômé en médecine et chirurgie de l'Université de Barcelone en 1980 et s'installe à Boston (États-Unis) pour mener des recherches fondamentales en ophtalmologie, obtenant un doctorat en biologie de l'Université de Harvard et soutenant sa thèse de doctorat sur les mécanismes de la sécrétion lacrymale, qui deviendrait la base de la compréhension de la pathologie du syndrome de l'œil sec (thèse présentée à Barcelone, 1983) et qui lui a valu le Prix national de la recherche (1983).

Le professeur Deraco a consacré sa carrière à aider les patients atteints de cancers complexes, en particulier ceux qui affectent le péritoine, une membrane de l'abdomen. Il a commencé sa carrière médicale en 1989 aux départements de chirurgie et d'oncologie expérimentale de la Fondazione IRCCS, Institut national du cancer de Milan, en Italie. Ces techniques visent à éliminer le cancer et à administrer la chimiothérapie chauffée directement dans l'abdomen, donnant ainsi un nouvel espoir aux patients atteints de PSM. Il a traité avec succès plus de 1 200 patients en utilisant ces méthodes avancées.

Sa formation s'est poursuivie à Paris, où il s'est spécialisé en oncologie à la prestigieuse Université Paris Dauphine. Il a perfectionné ses compétences grâce à des bourses dans des institutions de renommée mondiale telles que l'Institut Gustave Roussy en France, le Royal Marsden Hospital au Royaume-Uni et le Washington Cancer Institute aux États-Unis.

Tout au long de sa carrière, le professeur Deraco a continué à s'impliquer activement dans la recherche et les organisations professionnelles. Il a publié plus de 250 articles scientifiques et 25 chapitres de livres, contribuant ainsi à l'avancement du traitement du cancer à l'échelle mondiale.
