Le professeur Deraco a consacré sa carrière à aider les patients atteints de cancers complexes, en particulier ceux qui affectent le péritoine, une membrane de l'abdomen. Il a commencé sa carrière médicale en 1989 aux départements de chirurgie et d'oncologie expérimentale de la Fondazione IRCCS, Institut national du cancer de Milan, en Italie. Au fil des ans, il a joué un rôle clé dans l'avancement des traitements des tumeurs malignes de la surface péritonéale (PSM) . Pendant plus d'une décennie, il a été le médecin principal du programme des tumeurs malignes de la surface péritonéale. Depuis 2017, il est directeur de l'unité des tumeurs malignes de la surface péritonéale, où il continue de se concentrer sur la fourniture de soins de pointe à ses patients.

Le professeur Deraco est spécialisé dans les traitements spécialisés contre le cancer, comme la chirurgie cytoréductive (CRS), la chimiothérapie intrapéritonéale hyperthermique (HIPEC) et la chimiothérapie aérosolisée intrapéritonéale sous pression (PIPAC). Ces techniques visent à éliminer le cancer et à administrer la chimiothérapie chauffée directement dans l'abdomen, donnant ainsi un nouvel espoir aux patients atteints de PSM. Il a traité avec succès plus de 1 200 patients en utilisant ces méthodes avancées.

En plus de son travail clinique, le professeur Deraco est professeur à l'Université de Milan, où il enseigne aux futurs chirurgiens les tumeurs malignes de la surface péritonéale. Son enseignement s'étend à l'échelle internationale, puisqu'il a encadré plus de 30 boursiers postdoctoraux d'institutions prestigieuses du monde entier.

Le professeur Deraco a suivi une formation très complète. Il a obtenu son diplôme de médecine à l'Université de Messine en 1987 avec mention très bien, suivi d'une spécialisation en chirurgie générale cinq ans plus tard. Sa formation s'est poursuivie à Paris, où il s'est spécialisé en oncologie à la prestigieuse Université Paris Dauphine. Il a perfectionné ses compétences grâce à des bourses dans des institutions de renommée mondiale telles que l'Institut Gustave Roussy en France, le Royal Marsden Hospital au Royaume-Uni et le Washington Cancer Institute aux États-Unis.

Tout au long de sa carrière, le professeur Deraco a continué à s'impliquer activement dans la recherche et les organisations professionnelles. Il a publié plus de 250 articles scientifiques et 25 chapitres de livres, contribuant ainsi à l'avancement du traitement du cancer à l'échelle mondiale. Il siège au conseil d'administration de plusieurs sociétés scientifiques dédiées à la recherche sur le cancer, notamment le Peritoneal Surface Oncology International Group (PSOGI) et la Société italienne de thérapie locorégionale du cancer (SITILO).
