Le professeur Walter Klepetko dirige le département de chirurgie thoracique de l'université de médecine de Vienne, de l'hôpital général de Vienne (AKH) et de la Wiener Privatklinik. Le professeur Klepetko est diplômé de la faculté de médecine de Vienne en 1978 et a ensuite acquis une expérience de formation internationale à Hong Kong (hôpital Queen Mary), au Canada (hôpital général de Toronto), aux États-Unis (hôpital général du Massachusetts) et au Royaume-Uni (hôpital Papworth de Cambridge). Le professeur est un spécialiste de renommée internationale des interventions chirurgicales thoraciques étendues et de la transplantation. En 1989, il a lancé le programme de transplantation pulmonaire de Vienne, avec plus de 100 transplantations réalisées par an. Aujourd’hui, il est considéré comme l’un des principaux programmes de transplantation pulmonaire au monde. Le professeur Klepetko a lancé le programme en coopération avec les pays voisins pour accroître la disponibilité des donneurs d'organes. Parmi ses autres réalisations, citons le co-développement de la technique chirurgicale d'oxygénation extracorporelle par membrane (ECMO) pour la transplantation artificielle cœur-poumon. Selon sa déclaration, une immunosuppression améliorée aide les patients à mener une vie presque ordinaire. Pour le prouver, en 2017, le professeur Klepetko a accompagné ses 10 ex-patients en route vers le Kilimandjaro.
