3 main stages of in vitro fertilization (IVF):

1. Stimulation of the ovaries to isolate follicles (future eggs) of the necessary size.
2. Harvesting and fertilization of eggs. Specialists harvest eggs under general anesthesia for 10-15 minutes. After that, doctors fertilize the egg by the sperm applying IVF or ICSI method.
3. Embryo transfer to the uterus. Specialists transfer the embryo to the uterus 2-6 days after harvesting and fertilization.

What is the difference between IVF and ICSI?

During IVF, the sperm and egg are placed side by side, and the fertilization process is as natural as possible.

During ICSI, doctors inject sperm into the egg using a special micromanipulator. This method increases the chance of fertilization in couples that have problems with natural conception caused by the male factor.

Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is a diagnostic procedure that is carried out after the eggs harvesting and before the embryo transfer to the uterus. PGD is prescribed by a doctor and genetic counselor together with a patient.

PGD allows choosing the healthiest embryo of a particular sex and increasing the chance of getting pregnant.

With the help of preimplantation genetic diagnosis, doctors also detect hereditary and chromosomal diseases (Down syndrome).
