Our relative was in the hospital for several months, on various wards, and unfortunately, one crisis followed another. On the positive side: there are friendly people there, warm heating, and regular meals. One doesn't expect modern psychiatric care in our country. But it's much worse: the medical care there is a disaster. Doctors changed frequently and were sometimes very disrespectful (especially the head of the day clinic), "without capacity." They prefer to write privately paid reports during their working hours. Severely ill patients are left to their own devices in overcrowded rooms and (seriously, I'm sorry) injure/kill each other. More is discussed about the patients than with them/their families. People wait weeks for important physical health reports from the neighboring hospital. The patient was put on a medication that was not available for outpatients. The social security report for a rehabilitation application took weeks, and a medical report for the DRV (German Pension Insurance Association) was not available at all. "Discharge management" (see website) doesn't even exist. Naturally, this creates a revolving door effect. The clinic may offer shelter during the worst phases. Sometimes that's enough. However, Bremen's psychiatric system is completely unsuitable for seriously ill people. Health insurance companies pay so much money for this truly horrific place. It's unbelievable, sadly, like a horror movie. If it weren't for these beautiful park-like grounds, the pleasant Café Sophie, and the interesting hospital museum (with its compassionate staff, thank you!), we wouldn't have been able to endure it all. Perhaps those responsible for this disaster need to experience such a devastating experience in their own families.
